Jesus redefines greatness
In Mark 10, the disciples’ desire for status becomes an opportunity for Jesus to redefine leadership. In God’s kingdom, authority is not a licence to dominate. Greatness is expressed through service.
The towel and basin
John 13 gives a physical picture of servant leadership. Jesus knowingly takes the place of a servant and then tells his disciples to learn from his example. Christian leaders do not graduate beyond ordinary acts of care.
Shepherd willingly
1 Peter 5 warns against coercion, greed and domineering leadership. Elders are called to willing oversight and example, remembering that the church belongs to the Chief Shepherd.
