Study Lesson

Read slowly, check the biblical text and take time to reflect.

From death to life

Ephesians 2 describes a dramatic movement: from spiritual death and alienation to mercy, life and purposeful service. The centre of the passage is not human achievement but the richness of God’s mercy and grace.

Grace is God’s gift

Grace means that reconciliation with God is not a reward for religious performance. Christian confidence rests in what God has done in Christ. Faith receives that gift rather than earning it.

Faith produces a changed direction

Good works do not purchase salvation, yet the passage refuses to separate saving grace from a renewed life. Those who are made alive in Christ are also created for a new pattern of obedience, compassion and service.

Peace with God

Romans 5 connects justification with peace, hope and endurance. Suffering is not celebrated for its own sake, but believers can endure because God’s love has been demonstrated in Christ and poured into the life of the church by the Holy Spirit.

Discussion questions

  1. Why is it difficult for people to receive grace without trying to earn it?
  2. How do grace and good works relate without becoming confused?
  3. Where do you need to replace fear with gospel confidence?
  4. What good work could your faith move you toward this week?

Prayer

Thank God for mercy that cannot be earned. Ask for humility to receive grace and courage to live as someone made new in Christ.
